No band stirred up more debate online in 2010 than Salem. Called out for a reportedly awful SXSW gig and for its appropriation of Southern-rap tropes, the scuzzed-out Michigan trio (an early demo was called Yes I Smoke Crack) nevertheless turned heads with the oppressive cough-syrup-overdose throb of its debut album, King Night (IAMSOUND). But look beyond the slowed-down-voice raps, and you’ll find a bleak yet stirring brand of electropop catharsis.
