Alabama alto saxophonist Sherman Irby is probably still best remembered for his four-year stint in Roy Hargrove's powerful working quintet, during which time Irby also waxed a pair of Southern-fried, gospel-steeped bop sessions for Blue Note. A committed pedagogue who's spent less time in the spotlight lately, he hits Smalls for a welcome two-night stand.
