Steeve Hurdle

The Stone; Sat 13, Sun 14 [Update: Steeve Hurdle has canceled these appearances.]

Obscura, released in 1998 by the Quebec band Gorguts, is the extreme-metal equivalent of Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica, an album at once so strange and so purposeful that it claims a special spot in the canon. Unfortunately, guitarist, vocalist and co-composer Steeve Hurdle departed Gorguts after Obscura, rendering the record’s fixation on nightmarish dissonance and relentlessly turbulent rhythms a one-shot deal. Hurdle’s current band, Negativa, hasn’t yet made it to NYC, but this week, local left-field-metal fans get something equally appealing: three Hurdle performances at John Zorn’s LES avant-garde haven. On Saturday 13, Hurdle plays both solo and with avant-jazz piano ace Craig Taborn (who has held his own in metal-informed projects such as the Gang Font), and on Sunday 14, he participates in an improv free-for-all with Zorn, Kayo Dot’s Toby Driver and others. That it’s impossible to know what to expect from these gigs only makes them more enticing.—Hank Shteamer
