Last year, prodigious saxophonist-composer Steve Lehman and his longtime triomates—bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Damion Reid—issued their excellent debut album, Dialect Fluorescent, which featured originals alongside their versions of classics by John Coltrane, Jackie McLean and others (not to mention the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory theme song). This week the group, which perfectly balances the leader's brainy and earthy inclinations, plays a pair of local gigs in advance of a European tour.
