The Harold O'Neal Trio

Pianist Harold O'Neal, a Kansas City–raised local equally adept at postbop and hip-hop (to say nothing of his kickboxing and break-dancing skills), first caught our attention with 2011's extraordinary Marvelous Fantasy, a solo disc full of mood pieces too rare and delicate to simply be termed ballads. O'Neal's hard-driving small-group performances are just as impressive; tonight, catch him in the company of bassist Ben Williams and drummer Rodney Green.
