There's no dearth of events in NYC that allow participants to don ridiculous costumes and run wild through the city (see: SantaCon, Halloween, etc.), but few are as ridiculous as the annual Idiotarod. Based on the Iditarod (an Alaskan sled-dog race), the Idiotarod replaces pups with shopping carts, and teams follow a set route (sort of) throughout the city. Wearing silly outfits is strongly encouraged. This year's race was no exception: We saw teams dressed as characters from Super Mario Bros., chess pieces, and even a group based on Pee-Wee's Playhouse (with Cowboy Carl and Chairry representing).
