Spring into summer

Borough beaches are open and the temperature's been climbing, but today—summer solstice—is officially the first day of summer. Ready to celebrate? The Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City is hosting a Summer Solstice Celebration tonight from 5 to 9pm, rain or shine. There'll be food from local restaurants, music, a "traditional solstice ritual" (when's the last time you participated in one of those?), and art-making workshops hosted by artists from the Queens Museum of Art, the Noguchi Museum, Materials for the Arts and the Sculpture Park itself. The event is free (admission to the park always is), and it's a good excuse to watch the sun set over Manhattan—and have a relaxing end to the longest day of the year.
