The David Rockwell–designed, übermasculine Café at Country, with its auburn leather chairs, dark wood accents and wrap-around zinc bar, feels at once clubby and grandiose. This is that rare hotel restaurant that attracts as many locals as visitors, and the playful, creative American food merits the crowds. The salty, cool foie gras terrine is shiny and waxy, like a stick of meat butter. Gimmicky touches, like the jelly jar that holds the zesty, chunky beef tartare, do nothing to detract from the dish itself. The service is superlative: smooth, professional, knowledgeable.
