Breakout designer: JoAnn Berman

Who she is: Born and raised in New York, JoAnn Berman moved to London in 1979, where she helped supply clothing for the punk rock movement. She returned to New York in the ’80s and set her sights on dressing up-and-coming hip-hop stars. She now continues to design for musicians (most notably, Rihanna) and work on her namesake line out of her Bushwick loft.

Why we like her: Berman adds spunk to classic shapes and silhouettes with bright colors and bold patterns. What’s more, she uses donated materials and used clothing from vintage and secondhand stores to create her upcycled collection, proving that eco-friendly clothing need not be boring.

About the collection: Berman takes us on a trip with her artfully designed part-after-hours-stewardess, part-hippie-safari clothing. Timeless styles are interrupted by neon pockets and panels of loud prints. The pieces are just tame enough to be wearable but are sure to turn heads.—Celeste Kaufman
