Huminska (CLOSED)

Polish designer Janice Huminska picked up sewing at a young age in order to make clothes that would fit her long legs. Little did she know that skill would one day help her start her own women’s clothing line. After a stint in New York’s Garment District making bridal headpieces and hats, Huminska opened her first eponymous store in the East Village in 2001. Nine years later, her brand is expanding with the opening of her second Huminska shop in Nolita, which will serve as the flagship location, while her 9th Street store will turn into an outlet selling samples at up to 50 percent off. The cozy white-and-blue-tiled boutique serves as both store and studio for the designer: A golden spiral staircase descends to her basement workshop, which she recently relocated from Greenpoint. Huminska’s specialty is well-tailored dresses that can double for day and night, but don’t expect to find more than a few in each style on the racks—nothing she makes is mass-produced. Check out multicolored Art Deco–inspired frocks ($395), chic silk dupioni coats ($395), 1930s-style necktie silk dresses ($495) and Alexis Hudson leather handbags ($545).
