New York designer spotlight: Locally designed shorts

Show some leg this spring with men’s and women’s shorts from local labels Breese and Shelly LeSun.

As you update your wardrobe with the latest spring fashions for 2013, no shopping trip would be complete without a pair of shorts. Our latest designer spotlight takes a look at NYC labels Breese and Shelly LeSun, who apply whimsical prints and patterns to their shorts for men and women.

Who they are: While on a bachelor weekend getaway to Williamstown, Massachusetts, Tim Breese discovered a pair of perfect-fitting shorts at a vintage shop. Wanting to replicate the look and feel of his prized discovery, he launched a men’s sportswear brand in August 2012 with his wife, Monica. The couple grew up together in White Plains, New York, and currently split their time between Westchester and the Upper East Side. Monica, who went to the Fashion Institute of Technology and has worked as a sales rep for Rebecca Minkoff, selects the colors and cuts for the collection, while Tim, who started his career in enterprise software but took 3-D animation and modeling classes at the School of Visual Arts, designs all of the graphics. “[The line] is a validation of our partnership and creativity together,” says Tim. “It pushes us to do more.”

About the line: The duo takes traditionally preppy patterns, such as vibrant plaids and repeating miniature graphics, and gives them a modern twist by splashing shorts ($92) with unusual icons—including soldiers, military tanks, squirrels and pigs. “It runs the gamut from the golfer to the downtown guy— anyone can wear them,” notes Monica of their label’s demographic. “My dad who is 70 wears the shorts.” The pair introduced graphic tees ($35) to the line shortly after its debut, and started selling printed bow ties ($42) and cotton scarves ($35) in January. Everything is produced domestically in the Garment District and Pennsylvania. The Breeses hope to add duffel bags, bedding and additional accessories to their offerings in the next few months.
