The Feed outings: Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, Blau Gans BBQ and more
Sat Jul 4 2009
Happy Fourth of July fellow patriots. Here's where to go to celebrate hot dogs, beer and, for some reason, Austria. Perhaps because the 46th President will be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest
Now in its 94th year, this world-renowned frank face-off will give 21 contenders ten minutes to scarf as many dogs as they can. Fifty-nine wieners is this year's number to beat. Champ Joey Chestnut will return to defend his title against six-time winner Takeru Kobayashi. The only thing bigger than these guys' gullets is their fan bases, so come early for a good view. FREE Nathan's Famous, 1310 Surf Ave at Stillwell Ave, Coney Island, Brooklyn (nathansfamous.com). Noon--1pm.
Blaue Gans BBQ
Celebrate the nation's independence—and your own—with an (unorthodox) Austrian Fourth of July feast. Blaue Gans will nix its regular menu for an all-you-can-eat buffet, featuring an outdoor wurst cart and a whole roasted pig. There will also be salads and a Viennese cake bar. God bless Austria! Blaue Gans, 139 Duane St between Church St and West Broadway (212-571-8880). 2--10pm, $35.
Independence Day at Mercury Bar
One of the best things about America the Beautiful: those amber waves of grain. Celebrate the country's ale-giving crops with $4 domestic beers at this July 4th party. Patriotic cocktails, made with grenadine (red), Bacardi (white) and blue curaao are also available. FREE Mercury Bar, 659 Ninth Ave between 45th and 46th Sts (212-262-7755, mercurybarnyc.com). 10pm.
