Live at TONY: William Schimmel demonstrates his accordion wizardry

One of the most unusual annual events on NYC's summer music calendar is the American Accordionists' Association Master Class and Concert Series. For three days, the finest squeezebox talent around convenes to talk shop and perform a surprisingly wide array of musical fare, including classical, tango and avant-garde. At the helm of the gathering is local accordion virtuoso William Schimmel, an eccentric and exceedingly passionate champion of his unconventional instrument. In advance of the 2009 AAA concert series—taking place tonight, tomorrow and Sunday (July 24--26) at Tenri Cultural Institute—Schimmel stopped by TONY to perform "Sinfonia Da (Doo Ron Ron) Requiem," which he describes as "Stravinsky and Britten meet Phil Spector." Set any accordion prejudices you might have aside and behold.
