New York City is a tough place to find an apartment. People panic about not getting enough for their money, which is why we take a weekly look at what it’s possible to get in this town for about $1,000 a person. (And we promise, there won’t be a nightmare apartment listing.) No one wants to end up in the world’s most depressing apartment, but not everyone has the cash to pay for the kind of place Obama could afford to rent if he moves to New York. So take a look at these affordable apartments in NYC but do so quickly because they will be gone before you know it. Two-bedroom in Crown Heights, $2,400/month ($1,200 per person)
One step into the grand entrance hallway (complete with high ceilings) and you’ll feel that at last you’ve found your modern palace in central Brooklyn. Not only is it flooded with natural sunlight by all those windows, but also those beautiful soft-glowing light fixtures will be perfect for these short, blink-and-you-miss-it winter days.

Love HGTV? You’re in luck, because as a “flex” three-bedroom, you’re going to be building your own walls to fit your third into this luxury apartment. Still, with a location in prime East Village, an updated kitchen, views of the city and amenities like a doorman and onsite laundry, this place may be worth some DIY inventiveness and investment in earplugs.

Let’s stop for a moment to admire how many cabinets that kitchen has. If you had that many cabinets alongside your updated oven and dishwasher, you would actually feel inspired to cook. The apartment is otherwise spacious, but be forewarned: This is another place where the last bedroom needs to be converted. Luckily the multiple bathrooms—you read that right—are ready to go.

While these bedrooms may prove to be a snug fit for even a full-sized bed (no way a queen is fitting in there), it’s hard to beat the location. Not only are you close to multiple subway options, but you’re also a nice walk from both the established Park Slope eateries and a quick jaunt from Gowanus which seems to get a new cool bar/venue/boutique bathhouse every week.

While this apartment is the most expensive per person on the list, the sheer fact that the pad has two flippin’ floors should get even the most frugal of spenders excited. The living room and kitchen are both on the lower floor while the boudoirs are on the upper, meaning you’ll never have to worry about your late night binge sessions bothering your sleeping roommates. Sure, that one bedroom appears to have a window into a bathroom, but since the building is in the UWS, we’ll chalk that up to some old New York charm.
