Coming to Coney Island: Big Mark’s Action Park

Simulated skydiving, rock climbing and more are touching down on the boardwalk this summer.

Coney Island is getting a fresh infusion of what it does best—screams and cheesy fun—in the form of a new amusement park. Fun-stuff expert Mark “Big Mark” Zientek has plans to open Big Mark’s Action Park on Stillwell Avenue, on the former site of the aborted Cha Cha’s Steeplechase Fun Park. The diversions at the new spot could include, among other things, a rock-climbing wall, a skydiving simulator and hot-air-balloon rides.

In an ingenious bit of resurrection, Zientek has boozy designs on the Mega Whirl, an abandoned ride that suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy. He’ll turn it into a tropical bar, complete with DJs, live bands, a mechanical bull and something called “foxy boxing.” (The downside, aside from foxy boxing: The joint will close at the unpartyish hour of 11pm.)

Though the lease is still being finalized, Big Mark’s is tentatively slated to open this summer. Keep an eye on the spot’s Facebook page for updates and renderings of the park.
