It's hard to believe that the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy is fast approaching; even more mind-boggling is the fact that some businesses that were devastated by the storm are still getting back on their feet. But happily, one of those spots will open its doors again in about a week: The Brooklyn Paper reported today that legendary watering hole Sunny's Bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn, will finally reopen on August 29—which also happens to be owner Sunny Balzano's 78th birthday.

Getting there hasn't been easy for Balzano and his wife, Tone Johansen: In May, we reported on their post-Sandy struggles, and several fund-raisers and crowd-funding campaigns raised money to help the co-owners make necessary repairs. All told, the bar needed more than $100,000 to get things back in order.

It speaks to how beloved Sunny's is that so many people wanted to help out, and on the 29th, fans and community members can show their love during an opening ceremony at 7:30pm. So get out there and welcome Sunny's back—it's been a long time coming.
