The first phase of construction of 30 new acres of parkland on Governors Island is complete, and Hammock Grove—the attraction we were most excited about—looks like it won't disappoint. The area, which is exactly what it sounds like, has 50 red hammocks and gorgeous panoramas featuring the Statue of Liberty and lots of new trees (Bloomberg planted the last one yesterday—it's the 800,000th in the MillionTreesNYC initiative).
The new space also includes Liggett Terrace (a sunny plaza with public art) and two ball fields known as Play Lawn. You won't be able to test out the new additions yourself until the isle reopens next spring, but peep the photos above in the meantime.
