MTV is announcing VMA nominees today via Vine (video)

The music awards are happening in Brooklyn this year, and nominations are coming out through the social-media video platform—both for the first time.

Big changes are coming to MTV's Video Music Awards this year: The annual blowout is happening at the Barclays Center instead of the Staples Center (take that, L.A.!); the Moonman trophy got a redesign (pictured above) from BK artist Kaws; and today, the nominees are being announced via Vine.

For this inaugural social-media release, MTV got stop-motion artist Khoa Phan to create the short, as well as cute videos for all the categories. Check out the clips for Best Pop Video and Video of the Year below. The announcements will continue throughout the day via MTV's Twitter feed.

As for the big reveals, pop mogul Justin Timberlake and indie-rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are leading the pack—and competing with each other—with six nominations apiece. Head to MTV for the full list; the winners will be declared at the VMAs on August 25. (h/t Mashable)
