On Fridays I dance by the DJ booth at 675 Bar (675 Hudson St between 13th and 14th Sts; 212-699-2410, 675bar.com). My friend Brendan—DJ Rumor—plays throwback songs that you probably forgot about; old-school hip-hop and R&B, some electro and house, even some Beatles.

  3. People-watching at Tompkins Square Park (Ave A between 7th and 10th Sts; nycgovparks.org) during the day is a gem. There’s a neighborhood band that comes out on weekends when the weather’s nice and a jungle gym where lots of strong (and apparently famous) men work out.

  4. I go to the Peoples Improv Theater (123 E 24th St between Lexington and Third Aves; 212-563-7488, thepit-nyc.com). I like that it’s a smaller, more intimate theater and stage, and how friendly and easygoing the staff and cast are. Plus it’s only ten bucks!

At night I go to Fat Buddha (212 Ave A between 13th and 14th Sts; 212-598-0500, fatbuddhabar.com) because their happy hour goes until 10pm (Sun–Wed), they have really good old-school hip-hop, and chicken wings for about seven bucks. Maharlika (111 First Ave between 6th and 7th Sts; 646-392-7880, maharlikanyc.com) has an amazing fried-chicken ube waffle. Wow, I really like chicken.
