Bensonhurst old and new

Sky Lounge Martini Bar & Restaurant

➜ Lifelong locals Patty and Marline have celebrated every birthday, christening and wedding at Ortobello’s (6401 Bay Pkwy at 64th St, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn; 718-236-9810), a 30-year-old Italian restaurant that packs in a cross section of the neighborhood’s population—Chinese, Puerto Rican and Italian families.

➜ Get past the suburban-strip-mall feel of Café Europa (2313 65th St between 23rd and 24th Aves, 718-232-7056) and try the dessert, which a customer at Ortobello’s says is not to be missed. You’ll be rewarded with creamy house-made gelato and irresistible Italian pastries, plus famous brick-oven pies from the adjoining pizzeria.

Sky Lounge Martini Bar & Restaurant (2213 65th St at 6th St, 718-872-6095, nycskylounge.com)—a pick by Café Europa waitress Tina—is wall-to-wall with Russians in white jeans and wraparound sunglasses, smoking hookahs and ogling belly dancers. The gaudy joint, which serves elaborate Russian-fusion dishes, has been open for six months and is crowded nearly every weekend—if only because it’s the sole place in the area open till 4am.
