Weekend idea: Hit the beach and the Rockaway Ideas Festival this Saturday

Visit the Sandy-battered Rockaways and peruse goods from vintage curators and local designers.

The Rockaway Yard Sale combines two of our favorite things: beachgoing and shopping. On Saturday, June 29, stop by the Rockaway Ideas Festival (1–6pm) at the MoMA PS1 VW Dome 2, a geodesic dome at 95th Street and Shorefront Parkway. Goods include handmade limited-edition earrings by Melissa Draugsvold ($50–$72), organic skin and hair products by Goldies Natural Beauty ($22–$35) and retro fashions from Out of My Mind Vintage, such as Indian batik wrap skirts from the 1970s ($30).

Even though Rockaway Beach was ravaged by Sandy and most of its boardwalk obliterated, the neighborhood is bouncing back. A recent visit found the waterfront buzzing with activity, with long lines stretching at burger joint Rippers and sold-out vans shuttling tattooed beach bums to and from the surfer's paradise.

"The Rockaway Ideas Festival hopes to bring attention to the artisans and craftspeople working in Rockaway Beach, and the creative energy of this up-and-coming beachfront neighborhood in New York City," says organizer Bethany Scott. So when you need a break from sunning yourself—and scarfing down fish tacos at Rockaway Taco—stop by this minifest-cum-yard-sale.
