"Tom Rankin: Sacred Landscapes of the South"
April 15 - July 16
Alice & William Jenkins Gallery, Crealdé main campus
Hannibal Square Heritage Center

For more than 25 years, Tom Rankin has photographed rural churches and sacred spaces in the South -- the structures, the grounds, the worshipers, the baptisms, the burials. He returns again and again to the same places, documenting the effects of time and weather in powerful large-scale, black-and-white, film-based photographs that he shoots with an 8 x 10 large format camera.

This is an enduring project for Rankin, the former director of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in North Carolina, where he has lived for many years. This two-venue exhibition represents the long-term fascination and relationshp that the Kentucky native has developed with church communities throughout the South over more than two decades.
