Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

Opera returns to the Dr. Phillips Center with Opera Orlando. The company, formerly Florida Opera Theatre, returns to the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater with a creative marriage of a play-within-a-play featuring Mozart’s Impresario and Poulenc's Les Mamelles De Tiresias. Opera stars are joined by the Opera Orlando Children's Chorus and are supported by members of the Orlando Philharmonic, all led by guest conductor Michael Sakir. Savvy Director in Residence, Eric Pinder, will serve doubly as stage director & script adapter bringing these two comedies to life. The star-studded cast includes local favorites Julia Foster & Gabriel Preisser & several others from all over the country.

It's a celebration of the lighter side of the art form as Opera Orlando brings a boisterous birth to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. In this unique, premiere pairing, Mozart's classic comedy of a theatre impresario deciding between two operatic divas is updated to modern day Orlando, Florida where a struggling company desperate to do anything to survive must enlist the financial help of a flamboyant opera patron. He only makes one request, that the company uses his 2 new soprano flings, Everly Shrills & Bethany Squeals.

With all the backing needed, the Impresario can now do a piece he's always dreamed of - Les Mamelles de Tiresias or The Breasts of Tiresias, a surrealist piece by Francis Poulenc. The absurdist, gender bending plot starts with a housewife who is sick of doing chores and serving her husband, so she removes her breasts (two balloons) and becomes a man (Tiresias) which leads to her husband taking on the role of the woman and now having to produce babies by himself which he does, only too well...
