More British gastropub than Italian restaurant in looks, Il Gallo Nero occupies a confident corner spot on Rue Raymond Losserand in Montparnasse, Paris 14th. Original bare wood planks, a big old central wooden bar and lots of large windows form a handsome, down to earth picture that pub-loving Brits are very familiar with. A surprise then, perhaps, to learn Il Gallo Nero is an Italian restaurant, serving up generous, carefully presented portions of traditional favourites like grilled squid, bruschetta, osso buco and gorgeously cheesy pasta dishes. The market-led menu changes every lunchtime, so there’s always a new risotto to try.
