This fantastic family-run Algerian restaurant offers filling kebabs, couscous and speciality pastries.
These four brothers specialise in kebabs and couscous, with their showpiece being the ‘4 frères’ meal of 16 skewers (four each of liver, lamb, beef and merguez) at €17.50. You can also order any selection of skewers (all halal) either on their own or with couscous (from €6). Perfect either as starters or side dishes are the Algerian mhadjeb, a kind of puff pastry pancake stuffed with onions, tomatoes and spice (€4), a very well prepared chlita (a salad with grilled, chopped tomatoes and peppers, €3.90) or a traditional pastry with meat or tuna (€4.70). A good way to finish off any leftover couscous or semolina is with some of their brilliant méchoui (roasted lamb shoulder), but if you don’t fancy any more meat, opt instead for the loubia – a plate of stewed butterbeans at €4.50. If you find you’ve ordered too much, the staff will happily wrap up anything you have left for later. Avoid coming after 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, as tables get snapped up quickly and the restaurant doesn’t accept reservations – but at quieter times, the terrace overlooking the Rue de Sambre et Meuse is a very tranquil place to hang out.
