An affordable concept store at Ledru-Rollin that specializes in a little bit of everything.
The Aligre market and the Rue de Cotte are crawling with pricey gourmet bistros and trendy clothing boutiques, and Le Souk Parisien fits right in with its Formica tables and shelving made from wooden market crates. But this little concept store manages to stand out from the bunch by offering merchandise with the variety and approachability of an Arab souk (or open market), selling everything from lollipops (at 70 cents) to Albertine bathing suits (at €167.50). Much of the store’s goods are still Western, though: fine French spices, American candies, French-made artisanal jewellery and a host of knick-knacks, from children’s shoes and coffee mugs to floating shark fin tea infusers (€6) and decorative garlands (€12).
The shelves are a bit more crowded and chaotic than in most concept stores, but so much the better: for once you don’t have to worry about knocking over a display or hesitate to actually touch the items on offer. And as Sonia, the shop’s chipper owner, insists: the collection is still in progress! Overall, Le Souk Parisien is a nice place to browse for sweet or silly gifts on a budget.
