Romantic strolls in the suburbs

How to walk the way young lovers do

An amorous amble along the Seine – been there, done that. A walk with your loved one down the Canal Saint-Martin – what is this, 'Amélie'? Romance doesn't stop at the Boulevard Périphérique, and the Parisian suburbs have a lot to offer in the way of date-friendly green spots and riverside walks. Read on for two of the best...

From Yvette to Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse

As you arrive at the Saint-Rémy station, cop an eyeful of the atmospheric countryside vista that opens before you. You're a short walk away from the moody charm of the regional natural park of Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, and the medieval castle in the snug town of Chevreuse. This is a countryside of trickling brooks and picturesque Venetian bridges – about as romantic a setting as you'll get in Île-de-France.

How to get there:
Take the RER B to Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse. Exiting the station, head down the cycle path on your left, then turn right at the second intersection onto Rue des Ponts Blonniers. Here on your left, you'll find a shady pedestrian path that follows the Yvette river all the way to Chevreuse.

As you follow the river Yerres, taking in the rolling scenery of beavers, willows and manicured gardens, you'd be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled into a continental translation of a Beatrix Potter novel. Less frequented than the Marne, the Yerres provides a gloriously intimate setting for a stroll with your better half. Leaving Montgeron from the vast equestrian centre, follow the river down to the elegant Parc Caillebotte. From here, you can continue on to Périgny by foot or bike.

How to get there: Take the RER D to Yerres; head down Rue de la Gare, then Rue Concy.
