It’s the only capital city in Australia where you can watch the sunset over the ocean, but that’s not the only reason Perth is one of the coolest places to visit. Once solely known for its pristine beaches and perfect weather, Perth’s booming restaurant and culture scenes, and its trendy sister city Fremantle (located just half an hour from Perth) have put WA’s capital city on the international radar. If you're visiting, it's well worth the flight over (which is a little over four hours from Sydney or Melbourne), we promise. RECOMMENDED: These are the best restaurants in Perth right now.

Hungry in the most isolated city in the world? Not to worry, because the best restaurants in Perth are worth going out of your way to discover. The Western wonder is brimming with award-winning restaurants, bustling bars and charming cafés that breathe life into the city and its two million residents.  It feels a little lazy to say that eating yourself silly is one of the best things to do in Perth, but it would be disingenuous to suggest otherwise. The food here is exquisite and the best restaurants all have their own quirks and charm. So, bring that appetite to the end of the world and get ready for a feed.

Just a zippy 30-minute ferry ride from Fremantle (or 90 minutes from the Perth CBD), Rottnest Island is one of Western Australia's greatest gems. Also known by its local Aboriginal name, Wadjemup, and ‘Rotto’ by locals, it’s an essential addition to any WA itinerary. Out of towners may know Rottnest for its friendly population of quokkas, but the island is also home to the most incredible azure blue waters you’ll come across, and nowadays, it has a selection of top-notch eateries and luxe accommodation, as well as camping grounds, cafés and low-key restaurants for the budget-conscious.  Whether you’re ready to splurge on a peaceful retreat or simply spend your days lounging at the beach and sipping on pints at the hotel, you can easily spend a day, weekend or entire week on Rottnest Island.  Want to keep adventuring? Here are the best day hikes near Perth.

Built by convict labour in the 1850s, Fremantle Prison housed convicts, colonial prisoners, Aboriginal people, enemy aliens, prisoners of war and maximum-security detainees in its time. It finally closed for the purpose of holding prisoners in 1991 after a royal commission recomendation. These days, the imposing limestone structure has transfrmed into an archive of history and memory. Come in for a range of tours, including a 90-minute after-dark guided tour every Wednesday and Friday evening. The torchlight turn about the grounds is scary but compelling, giving you a (dimly lit) glimpse of the kinds of horrors prisoners endured during their captivity. Otherwise, there are seasonal exhibitions collating personal accounts and photographs; art showcases; and more.  If you or one of your group turns peckish on your visit, a café also operates on site – and it promises to be a far cry from prison food.

The sleepy coastal town of Exmouth is adjacent to the Cape Range National Park and 300 kilometre Ningaloo Reef – a region that is drop dead gorgeous and a brimming with vitality. Located about 1,270 kilometres north of Perth – around a 15-hour drive or two-hour flight to nearby Learmouth, it’s a nature lover’s playground with one of the longest fringing reefs on the planet, meaning in many places the coral comes right up to the beach. It’s no surprise visitors from all over the world are flocking to the Coral Coast where adventure and fresh seafood dominate the local menus. // var axel = Math.random() + ""; var a = axel * 10000000000000; document.write(''); //

Rockpool is a restaurant demonstrating that fine dining needs to be neither elite nor pretentious. Sure, you’ll find the white-coated service that puts many on their guard, but it’s carried out with old-school European ease. Service that is a real pleasure to experience is often in short supply this side of the Nullarbor, but in abundance here, and the menu shows how to engage everyone from your casino high roller to the thriftier end of the casino crowd. Dine in the restaurant, order big on the Blackmore Wagyu and explore the more than 2,000 bottle wine list. Stump up for the $50 lunch set menu, or simply go the burger route. Casting the net so wide very rarely works, but again, Perry’s outpost is the exception.

Rottnest Island is a unique place, and very different to all the other inclusions on this list. The only spot in the world where you can find a quokka – a smiling, fluffy marsupial with no natural predators, Rottnest is an open-air nature reserve that also acts as a sanctuary for some very rare and special animals. With no cars on the island, you can walk or cycle around to some of the most spectacular beaches in the world and see quokkas, birds, reptiles, seals and whales all dancing without cages in their natural habitat. It is important to acknowledge that Rottnest (whose original name is Wadjemup) has an ancient Indigenous history and a recent tragic past that must be respected.

Perth may be known for its crystal clear waters, seaside sunsets and eternally camera-ready quokkas, but there's also a plethora of art and culture to be seen and pondered.  Whether it's paintings from the world's oldest living culture, or a blast from the past with all the best retro video games, tradition awaits in the city of lights. If it's the new you crave, you'll find contemporary works from emerging Aussie artists, plus the new frontier of science innovation.  The main takeaway? Perth has got a little bit of everything waiting for your viewing pleasure.  RECOMMENDED: Cool off at one of the best beaches in Perth.

One of Perth's only two legal nude beaches, North Swanbourne has been bringing joy to naturists since WW2, and is about 40 minutes drive from Perth's city centre. Although perhaps not as pretty as other WA beaches, Swanbourne gets points because of how much easier it is to reach in a state that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'long road trip'. Swimmers can come off once you reach the 'Clothing Optional' signs, and you can expect sheltering dunes to cut you off from the rest of the beach. Pro tip: Go early in the day to avoid blustery winds. You heard it here first.
