Performing on solo drum kit, Will Guthrie’s playing is truly virtuosic. His return to Perth en route to MONA FOMA, will see him ignite the space with jagged rhythms and minimally unfolding patterns formed through taking extreme discipline to its breaking point.

Guthrie will be joined by local sound artist Michael Terren, working with his unique combinations of field recordings and digital synthesis to create microscopically detailed sound worlds, and improvising vocalist Sage Pbbbt, who channels a practice of throat singing, sound poetry and vocal extension from their own multi-faceted explorations of gender, shamanism, meditation, trance, Discordianism and beyond.

Will Guthrie

Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer / percussionist living in Nantes, France. He works in many different settings of music: live performance, improvisation and studio composition using various combinations of drums, percussion, objects, junk, amplification and electronics.

In Nantes, France he is part of the collective CABLE# which also organizes regular concerts and an annual festival. He also runs the experimental improvised CD label and mail-order service; ANTBOY MUSIC.

He plays solo using different combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics, in minimalist/maximalist free jazz trio THE AMES ROOM (with Jean-Luc Guionnet & Clayton Thomas), in appalachian mutant folk duo ELWOOD & GUTHRIE (with Scott Stroud), as well as the electro/acoustic improvised/composed ensemble THYMOLPHTHALEIN (with Anthony Pateras, Natasha Anderson, Clayton Thomas & Jérôme Noetinger).
