Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)'s acclaimed percussion ensemble Defying Gravity and special guests present an enchanting night of music inspired by the sounds of India and the Middle East, performed outdoors under the stars.

The night opens with a selection of epic, original Persian love songs performed on traditional instruments by visiting musicians Arman Abednia and Iman Sepahsalari, accompanied by Pippa Lester and Defying Gravity’s Tao Issaro.

The full Defying Gravity ensemble will then disperse throughout the Front Garden to perform a nature-inspired soundscape composed by Tao Issaro and Tim White, drawing on the leafy trees and lush surroundings. Encircled by musicians, the rhythms will wash over the audience in a live surround-sound experience.

To close the show, all of the players will come together to perform the magical new work Karma, composed by Tao Issaro. Written specifically to be performed in this space and drawing on the musical influences of his homeland India, this unique work traverses a range of sounds and moods. Opening mysteriously with the God Krishna bringing the universe into being, the piece goes on to explore the four elements – earth, water, wind and fire – before ending with a thrilling tumult of joyful, high-energy rhythm and movement.

Music Director: Tim White
