Join 2016 Asialink Artist in Residence Liu YaoChung as he invites members of the public into his studio on Sunday 1 May and Sunday 8 May. Liu explores concepts of extreme loneliness and isolation, simultaneously reflecting upon Fremantle Arts Centre’s history as a lunatic asylum and place of enclosure. His installation sees his studio transformed into a sparse, darkened environment with all reminders of the world outside obscured as a monitor screens a 10-minute video loop of the Fremantle sky. Liu will be available throughout the Open Studio to answer questions and discuss his work.

Liu YaoChung (Taiwan) is an artist, writer and bookstore clerk. He was nominated for the Young Artist Taipei Award and 2013 Taishin Arts Award, and selected for the 2014 Free Art Fair Award. Liu explores how language and images interact. His practice engages with contemporary popular culture, juxtaposing popular and historical themes to create new readings of familiar objects. Liu has been delving into Australian culture during his three-month residency at Fremantle Arts Centre.
