Odeya Nini: A Solo Voice w/ Meg Foley: Lay of THIS Land Performances Friday, March 13th 8pm $7 to $10 Free the Voice A Workshop with Odeya Nini Vox Populi AUX Space Friday, March 13th 11:00am to 1:00pm $20 A SOLO VOICE Evolving over the last four years, A Solo Voice is an investigation of extended vocal techniques, resonance and pure expression, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. This work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements, aiming to disassociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but also seen in movement. Through multidimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures, ages, emotions and colors, like photographs, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance. FREE THE VOICE Friday, March 13th 11:00am to 1:00pm at Vox Populi $20 A workshop dedicated to Vocal Expression, understanding the physicality of sound, freeing our minds of preconceived ideas of song, and opening our ears to new forms of sonic composition within ourselves. For anyone who needs to release their voice! Both through introspective work and outward playfulness, we will explore the voice as an instrument that radiates from the body and movement, not limited to conventions of language, but rather able to convey myriad forms of communication. All are welcome! ________ Lay of THIS Land by Meg Foley is an in-progress, scored improvisation, derived from my regular research practice, in which I juggle five different improvisational tasks at once in an attempt to place whatever I'm doing at the center of what I'm doing, holding it and letting it loose towards new centers at the same time. My primary question is how do I score this mapping of experience from the inside when it is so dependent on the variables (including you, including me) of the moment. _________ BIOs Odeya Nini is a Los Angeles based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer. At the locus of her interests are textural harmony, gesture, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète. Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur. Odeya’s work has been presented at venues and festivals around the US and internationally from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv, Canada, Odessa, Mongolia and Vietnam. Odeya holds a BFA from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music where she studied with Theo Bleckmann and Gerry Hemingway, and an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts. Her debut album Vougheauxyice (Voice), for solo voice, was released in April of 2014. Meg Foley is a Philadelphia-based artist. Her work has been shown in Philadelphia, NYC, Toronto, and Warsaw in proscenium theaters, low-tech spaces, visual art galleries, at outdoor festivals, and at a TEDx event in Phoenixville, PA. She dances for Susan Rethorst and Shannon Murphy. Aside from dancing, her favorite things to do are looking at others’ creative work and talking about process or being in the woods. Current projects include The 3:15 Project, in which she spontaneously makes a dance, wherever she is, at 3:15pm daily. The current round of the project began in October 2012, continues presently, and has integrated into a larger effort to document and share her improvisational practice, slotted for exhibition in April 2016. Although she is a body junkie, her work is informed by her background in visual arts, photography and installation art most specifically. She is a 2012 Pew Fellow in the Arts, and she teaches art theory and composition at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. www.movingpartsdance.org
