Modified Arts is proud to continue its partnership with Amy Young and Perihelion Arts for an exhibition of works by veteran Arizona artist David Dauncey, alongside the first local exhibition of LA-based artist Charles Swenson.

Across 40 years, Charles Swenson has amassed an impressive career in painting, studio assisting, development, and animation. Beginning his career with the famed Charles Eames, Swenson moved into animation work on such acclaimed projects as Puff the Magic Dragon and Strawberry Shortcake for the LA studio Filmfair, before animating on Rugrats and Ahh! Real Monsters and creating the Cartoon Network series Mike, Lou & Og. Most recently, Swenson has refocused his eye on these independent projects, including the award-winning short film “Bookashkis” and his painting, with a focus on impressionistic portraiture.

A 20-plus year history of the downtown Phoenix arts scene would be useless without stressing the impacts of painter David Dauncey. A founding member of the 3carpileup artist collective with Randy Slack and James Angel, Dauncey has painted and organized art exhibitions of all kinds in spaces at the Luhrs Building, Hotel San Carlos, The Hub, and on Grand Avenue, always evolving his portraiture along the way. Over the years, Dauncey’s work has moved from soft, stoic portraits, to include more graphic imagery, and adding torsos while reassessing his compositions of faces.

Veterans of their respective scenes, Dauncey and Swenson combine to show what a contemporary portrait practice can be, evolving the form to fit their animated and hyperreal visions.
