In this talk I explore long forgotten traditions of Hermetic thought and spirituality that catalyzed the emergence of early modern science in Western civilization. The affirmation of materialism, rationalism, and mechanism over the last four hundred years has determined the form and substance of contemporary science and its technological applications, but these principles have impoverished our conception of nature, world, and life. The Hermetic vision emphasizes stewardship of the earth, ecological consciousness, and care for life, in sharp contrast to the exploitative agenda of science and technology.
