“Culture, they say, is a two-way street.” – Langston Hughes

If you ignore history, you are doomed to repeat it – such the adage goes, and so goes truth. The deep and tangled past of this country comes back to bite us on the regular – the more we can grapple with the way America was built the more hopeful the future grows. The idea of the folk-singer, the protest singer, the singer-songwriter has become an icon of American resilience – but too often that voice is assumed to be white. There is a strong history of protest, subversion and cultural resistance from the musicians of color throughout the history of the United States, from the original inhabitiants to recent immigrants. Led by Rhiannon Giddens, founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, this concert will explore the songs of resistance of the South, both old and new, the deep history of protest songs from Leyla McCalla’s Haiti and Louisiana, and the modern outsider-looking-in observations of 1st generation American Bhi Bhiman.
