Oregon Historical Society says
George Atkinson (1819-1889) was among the most influential people in the Pacific Northwest during his four decades (1848-1889) of residence here. Sent to Oregon as a Congregational missionary, he gave sustained attention to both community involvement and church work. Atkinson was a peripatetic traveler, an alert observer, and an articulate writer. His community leadership extended to public and private education, railroads, penitentiaries, Native American affairs, industry, and agriculture. The presentation will draw on Atkinson's written legacy of some four hundred letters and more than sixty lengthy newspaper columns to describe his vision and influence.
