IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is the second film in our inaugural Friday Film Club discussion series. Friday Film Club programming will consist of themed series of four films, with one film screened per month.

Our first series, which runs from September-December, coincides with the Portland Art Museum's "Seeing Nature" exhibition, and centers around implicit and explicit depictions of landscape on film. Films will screen early in the afternoon (5:30 p.m.), and will be a followed by a discussion and/or group tour led by Film Center staff and Art Museum docents.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE
DIRECTOR: WONG KAR-WAI
HONG KONG, 2000
A tiny, sparsely populated slice of early-1960s Hong Kong forms the backdrop for Wong’s hyper-stylish yet thorny dissection of the politics of infidelity and the bonds formed through modern urban malaise. Hong Kong superstars Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung feature as star-crossed neighbors-turned-lovers whose spouses have a secret tryst; soon, they forge their own connection, rooted in a hot-house of longing. Gloriously lensed by the inspired team of Christopher Doyle (CHUNGKING EXPRESS, THE LIMITS OF CONTROL) and Mark Lee Ping Bin (THE PUPPETMASTER, FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI), Wong’s small-scale, contemplative drama is “a vertiginous, obsessive mood piece.”—Kevin B. Lee. In Cantonese and French with English subtitles.
