Silent Sparks: The Wondrous World of Fireflies
With Sara Lewis, PhD, Professor in the Department of Biology at Tufts University

For centuries, their ethereal beauty has evoked wonder and delight. Yet for most of us, fireflies remain shrouded in mystery: How do these creatures make light? What are they saying with all their flashing? Are fireflies disappearing? In this talk, noted biologist and firefly expert Sara Lewis dives into the mysterious world of fireflies and reveals the most up-to-date discoveries about these charismatic insects. Join her journey from the meadows of New England and the hills of the Great Smoky Mountains, to the rivers of Japan and mangrove forests of Malaysia, to hear remarkable stories of firefly courtship and romance, poison and deceit.

Sara Lewis is a Professor of Biology at Tufts University who tries hard to stay susceptible to wonder. Over the past thirty years, her scientific research into the luminous lives of fireflies has revealed many intimate secrets of firefly sex and death. Author of 80+ scientific papers, Lewis has also given a TED talk and written numerous popular articles on fireflies. Her new book Silent Sparks: The Wondrous World of Fireflies (Princeton 2016) is a richly illustrated and passionate look at these beloved creatures, and a call to reconnect with the magic of the natural world.
