The event creator says
Throughout my 29 years, I’ve had the good fortune of having other folks believe in me. Teachers pushed, mentors pulled. Friends prodded, lovers coaxed. Amazing creatures like Heather Evanson, who was in the audience the first time I ever read in Portland; Emily Riley, who told me that my nervous hair-pulling is okay as long as the words are able to stand on their own two legs; Jeffrey Burshaw, who, despite our bickering, convinced me that I should be in print. But I have to say that the biggest direct influence on my writing is Brittany Baldwin. The very first time I heard her, I ran off to the lab to get better. To get honest. What I hear the most about my own writing, other than that it isn’t really poetry, is that what I do is brave and honest. And if I am to be brave and honest here, I’d have to say that I’m just trying to be like Brittany, y’all.

Brittany Baldwin did not fit in with the other children. She grew up on the back side of a thousand acre park and often packed a back pack full of blank paper, books and snacks and escaped there. Sometimes she coaxed out her neighbors Mastiff to join her. Brittany Baldwin does not always fit in with the other adults. They usually look the other way because she is a good cook. She lives on an acre next to a creek in Scappooose with a great dane and still wanders the woods often. She is more likely to remember your cats name than your child's -and feel terrible about it.
