Calls to "take back America" frequent campaign cycles targeting various "others" as the reason for America's problems. Too often, Asian Americans (and now Muslim Americans) have become the victims of such electioneering rhetoric. This talk will examine the historical roots of this All-American phenomenon and what we can do about it.

Jack Tchen is an award winning historian, curator, and writer. He is founding director of the Asian/Pacific /American Studies Program and Institute at New York University, NYU and co-founder of the Museum of Chinese in America, where he continues to serve as senior historian. He has just completed a critical archival study of images Yellow Peril! An Archive of Anti-Asian Fear on the history and ongoing legacy of paranoia and xenophobia and served as the senior historian for a New-York Historical Society exhibition on the impact of Chinese Exclusion Laws on the formation of the US.
