Portugal isn’t exactly a hidden gem, but whatever you do, make sure you don’t sleep on the Porto. In our opinion, Porto is the best city break in the whole of Europe, so if you’re looking for great food and a ridiculous number of great things to do, you’re in the right place.  Here you’ll find beautiful bookstores, old-school cinemas and rows and rows of colourfully-packaged tinned fish to grab for your next date night (if you know, you know). Buy souvenirs at ancient markets, people-watch from outdoor bars and try your first francesinha, if you dare. Here are the best things to do in Porto.  RECOMMENDED:🍴 The best restaurants in Porto🍻 The best bars in Porto🏖️ The best beaches in Porto💗 The best romantic hotels in Porto This article was written by the editorial team at Time Out Porto. When you think of food in Porto, you might be picturing shelves upon shelves of brightly-coloured tinned fishies. And to be fair, there's a lot of tinned fish here. But Porto specialises in so much more in the world of food. Sumptuous octopus and rice. Baked salt cold. Cozido à Portuguesa (a meaty stew). And of course, the ever-intimidating francesinha, which is basically a seriously meaty Portuguese version of a croque monsieur.  There is so much great food here, in fact, it can feel virtually impossible to know where to begin. And that's where we come in. The editorial team at Time Out Porto have been sending their restaurant critics all over the city for years, to find out the absolute best of the best in Porto cuisine. On our list, we've included mostly good, proper traditional spots for Portuguese grub, but we've made sure to include where to find the best Mexican, Indian, Italian and more. Whatever you fancy, here are the best restaurants in Porto right now.  RECOMMENDED:📍 The best things to do in Porto 🍻 The best bars in Porto🏖️ The best beaches in Porto This guide was written by the editorial team at Time Out Porto. At Time Out, all of our travel guides are written by local writers who know their cities inside out. • Bars and pubs

In our opinion, casual drinking in Porto is one of the best things you can do while you're there. The city has a great mix of trendy wine bars and drinking holes, and huge, outdoor terraces that spill onto the street. It's also a pretty late-night place, so there's plenty options to take you into the night. Whether it's craft beer, spirits or natural wine you're after, there's something for you in Porto. Spend your days admiring its sights, and your evenings tucking into drinks and snacks. Here are the best bars in Porto right now, for drinking, dancing, or both.  RECOMMENDED:📍 The best things to do in Porto 🏖️ The best beaches in Porto This guide was written by the editorial team at Time Out Porto. At Time Out, all of our travel guides are written by local writers who know their cities inside out. Porto is full of fun stuff to do, but there are some things you absolutely cannot miss: we'd say tinned fish, good port, and your first ever francesinha. This monstrous sandwich was invented in the 50s, by a Portuguese man (Daniel Silva) who was living in France at the time. He saw the croque monsieur and thought, ‘hey, let's go bigger’.  Thick white bread encases layers of Portuguese sausage, ham and roast beef or steak, served with a fried egg and an incredibly rich beer and cheese sauce. It's not for the faint hearted, but it's absolutely delicious, and a non-negotiable must-try in the city. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of places to get it, but only some of them are worth your dough. Here are the best places to get a francesinha in Porto.  RECOMMENDED:📍 The best things to do in Porto 🍻 The best bars in Porto🏖️ The best beaches in Porto This guide was written by the editorial team at Time Out Porto. At Time Out, all of our travel guides are written by local writers who know their cities inside out. We're not shy about the things we love. In regards to the Adega São Nicolau, we are very expansive: we love everything. There's the menu, full of great choices – such as chicken bordelaise, octopus fillets with rice or the perfect appetizer, cod cakes. But we can also mention the desserts (all homemade) or the outdoors tables, strategically facing the Douro river. And then there's the great service – mr. António Coelho has been doing this since he was 11.

When it comes to Portugal, the capital city of Lisbon gets arguably more than its fair share of attention. But the savvy traveller has long known that little sister city Porto is crammed with its own must-see charms. Porto’s modest size makes it easy to navigate which, in turn, means you can easily visit more than one of our top ten attractions in one day. Take a dip in a stunning swimming pool, photograph a train station that’s worth visiting in its own right (yes, really) or simply get your fill of the gorgeous Duoro River and the megalithic Dom Luis I iron bridge stretching across to Gaia. And, finally, don’t forget you’re literally in the home of port – a trip to the Vila Nova de Gaia wine cellars to learn more about Porto’s most famous export is basically non-negotiable. Cheers! Few things are better about this city than the abundance of family restaurants where you can eat superbly – and this has been one of them for more than 35 years. Casa Nanda is a typical example of Northern hospitality, the kind you would find at an elderly grandparent's place, where the same dishes have been cooked hundreds of times, their taste refined to perfection. Here those dishes include hake fillets with rice or potato salad and the grilled beef rib.

The kinds of places in which recipes are passed down through generations, and each dish is perfectly refined.
