The event creator says
My work uses piñatas as a medium to reflect on my identity as a Mexican-American Woman. I am fascinated with rituals performed with the piñata in a traditional setting of a birthday celebration. By adopting this medium I seek to investigate ways which playfully transform pinatas into a visual language by incorporating novel materials, methods of production, and themes. Through my work I encourage public dialog on conventional topics present in American culture by presenting works that reflect on mass consumption, women’s reproductive rights, sexual liberation, and transborder culture.

The works depicted in my exhibition entitled Asking For It aims to provoke public dialog about conventionally private topics regarding women's relationship to the objects represented through this series of pinatas. Through these works I further investigate the topic of taken for granted objects to explore social stigmas, judgements, and violence against women. Other topics explored in this series includes taboos, misconceptions, and accessibility to feminine hygiene products, American beauty standards, and rape culture.
