Guest Lecture – Free! – Speaker: Elizabeth Morrison, Senior Curator, Department of Manuscripts, J. Paul Getty Museum

Lecture Title: "Beasts before Brueghel: From Invention to Specimen”

In medieval manuscripts, familiar creatures like hedgehogs and dogs appear next to equally lively depictions of unicorns and dragons. Were these creatures actual inhabitants of the earth, or symbols of the world created by God for mysterious yet specific reasons? This lecture explores the role of both real and fantastic animals in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Over the course of the centuries, the legendary stories associated with animals gave way to more scientific and empirical considerations of their appearance and behavior.

Elizabeth Morrison is Senior Curator of Manuscripts at the J. Paul Getty Museum. She received her PhD in the History of Art from Cornell University and began work at the Getty in 1996. During her tenure there, she has curated numerous exhibitions, including "Imagining the Past in France, 1250-1500," which was a finalist for the 2010 College Arts Association award for outstanding exhibition catalogue. She has published articles on both Flemish and French illumination, and has served on the boards of the International Center of Medieval Art and the Medieval Academy of America.
