Kelsey Brookes: Book Signing And Print Release Party says
Quint Gallery is pleased to present a special weeklong event, which will serve as the debut of Kelsey Brookes’ new monograph: KELSEY BROOKES – PSYCHEDELIC SPACE. Published and distributed by Gingko Press in association with Quint Gallery and Library Street Collective this hard cover, full color, 216 page book is the first monograph of it’s kind for the artist. Kelsey Brookes will be on hand to sign books at the event. Quint Gallery is also pleased to present a new print edition and a selection of new paintings by the San Diego-based artist. The new prints and paintings will be on view for one week only, September 5-12, 2015. The special event will take place on Saturday, September 5th from 5-7pm and is open to the public.

PSYCHEDELIC SPACE examines 3 years of work, four solo exhibitions by the artist and explores in depth his former background as a biochemist and his current meditative practice as a painter. Brookes’ art masterfully melds a deep knowledge of science to create bright, intensely detailed paintings that abstract drug compounds, molecules, atoms and hallucinogenic states to heighten viewers’ sensory perceptions and reactions. The opening essay by Montserrat College of Art Director Leonie Bradbury offers a multifaceted overview of Brookes’ impact on the current art landscape and is complemented by a variety of responses and writings from a wide range of interdisciplinary contributors. Artist Ryan McGinness offers a visual essay that explores and contrasts two vastly different artistic processes while Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis provides a dynamic interview exchange between artist and musician. Hamilton Morris, journalist and science editor of Vice Magazine, provides insight into Kelsey Brookes’ scientific approach to his painting process, while Pennsylvania State University Information Science and Technology professor Richard M. Doyle hyper analyzes two of the artist's seven-inch paintings. Scientific line drawings, installation images, details, fold-outs and much more make this comprehensive monograph a dazzling look into the studio practice of Kelsey Brookes.

The prints to be presented consist of four prints, along with a new monoprint, highlighting the artist's ongoing investigation of the intersection of science and art. The prints: LSD, Serotonin, Mescaline, Psilocybin, and a Psilocybin monoprint are based off of paintings that Kelsey Brookes presented at Quint Gallery in 2012 in an exhibition titled Serotonin: Happiness and Spiritual States. The prints, like the paintings, are meticulous and complex. In some cases over 20 silk screens are used to create the desired outcome of interactions of colors. Each print is signed, dated and numbered by the artist. Also on view will be several new large-scale paintings by Kelsey Brookes including a new series called One Continuous Line. The new paintings will serve as a preview of our upcoming solo exhibition with Kelsey Brookes, which is scheduled for 2016.
