The event creator says
To my friends and supporters:

It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know I am withdrawing my candidacy for the State Assembly. In an unexpected turn of events, I recently learned that Todd Gloria, current San Diego City Councilmember and former mayor, has decided to run for this seat and is announcing his candidacy today. This obviously changes the landscape of my race in a significant way.

Above all, I am mindful of the time and resources of my supporters – this has weighed heavily on my decision. Additionally, Todd and I are friends and allies, he has been serving our community well in public office for many years, and we see eye-to-eye on so many issues. I am confident that Todd will continue to serve our community well in the 78th Assembly District. For this reason, I am supporting him in this election, and I encourage you to do the same.

Given this development, I am cancelling my campaign kick-off event set for this Thursday, April 9th. I was honored to have some of the great leaders of our community standing with me at the very beginning of this race, including Congressman Juan Vargas, former Congresswoman Lynn Schenk, former State Senators Christine Kehoe and Dede Alpert, as well as Councilmember David Alvarez. Of course, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Speaker Toni Atkins for believing in me, mentoring me, and supporting me every step of the way. I am deeply grateful to the 65 event hosts and 24 event sponsors for supporting me so early in this campaign. I am also grateful to those who have already donated to my campaign, volunteered, and supported me in other ways over the past few months.
Although we have already incurred some campaign expenses to date, we will be returning the bulk of the money raised to our donors. We will be in touch with you in the coming weeks on that front as we unwind our campaign.

In closing, it has been my great honor to serve our community, to speak out on how we can improve it, and to have your support in the process. I remain committed to public service, whether or not I am elected to public office.
Thank you, again, for everything.

Sincerely,

Sarah Boot
