Join us for a screening of the current academy award nominated film Last Day of Freedom, and discussion of its making with its filmmakers Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman.

Last Day of Freedom (32min 2015) When Bill Babbitt realizes his brother Manny has committed a crime he agonizes over his decision- should he call the police? Last Day of Freedom is a richly animated personal narrative that tells the story of Bill’s decision to stand by his brother, a Veteran returning from war, as he faces criminal charges, racism, and ultimately the death penalty. This film is a portrait of a man at the nexus of the most pressing social issues of our day – veterans’ care, mental health access and criminal justice.

Last Day of Freedom is part of a series of films called Living Condition, a multi-platform documentary project that portrays the failing U.S. American criminal justice system through the lens of families living with a relative on death row

Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman have been collaborating on film, video, new media and art installations since 2004. Their projects explore trauma, justice and memory. They seek to address critical social issues through their collaborative projects that question the false divisions we make between public and private spheres, personal memory, politics and democracy. Their most recent film, Last Day of Freedom, has been awarded Best Short at CDS Filmmaker Award Change (an Oscar qualifying category), Film Maker Award by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke, the Justice Impact Award at (In) Justice for All International Film Festival, Audience Award for Best Short at San Francisco Documentary Festival and Best Short at The Hamptons International Film Festival. Dee is Associate Professor of Art and Digital New Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Nomi is Independent Editor and Media Producer.
