In conjunction with Arnold Newman: Masterclass, Darius Himes, Christie's International Head of Photographs, moderates a panel about collecting contemporary portrait photography, with Chris McCall, Director, Pier 24, San Francisco; Erin O’Toole, associate curator of photography at SFMOMA; and collector Carla Emil.
Erin O’Toole is associate curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Most recently she collaborated with Leo Rubinfien and Sarah Greenough on the retrospective exhibition Garry Winogrand (2013). She is currently at work on a retrospective of the photographs of Anthony Hernandez, slated for 2016, and an exhibition about television and contemporary art for 2018. She is a contributing author of The Photographic Object, 1970 (forthcoming from UC Press), Janet Delaney: South of Market (2013), Garry Winogrand (2013), and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: 75 Years of Looking Forward (2010).
Carla Emil, collector, is deeply committed to the arts, arts education, and human rights as demonstrated by her work with organizations like SFMOMA, Second Stage Theatre, California College of the Arts (CCA), Human Rights Watch, and Death Penalty Focus.

Darius Himes is Christie's International Head of Photographs. He was recently Director of Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and a co-founder of Radius Books, a non-profit publisher of books on photography and the visual arts. A lecturer and writer, Himes has contributed to Aperture, Blind Spot, Bookforum, BOMB, PDN, and American Photo. His most recent book, Publish Your Photography Book, co-authored with Mary Virginia Swanson, was released by Princeton Architectural Press in spring, 2011. An updated second edition was published in the spring, 2014.
