Things to do, Festivals

You gotta pound a lot of rice to make a little mochi—might as well make it a party. A sweet tradition to ring in the Japanese new year, Omochitsuki! finds local mochi masters Kagami Kai leading the community in a dynamic show of song, dance and costume as they pound steamed rice into stretchy layers of sweet delicacies. Stick around after the show to paint a rooster netsuke and don’t forget to take home a fortune from the fortune tree for good luck throughout the year.
