Town Hall Seattle says
Antarctica is almost entirely covered by ice, precluding use of the usual geological sampling and mapping methods. According to Doug Wiens, a seismologist at Washington University in St. Louis, the history of these ice sheets is intertwined with the continent’s geological record. He’ll explain how recent advances in technology allow scientists to “see through the ice” and gain a better understanding of the continent beneath. Wiens will discuss ongoing seismic research in Antarctica and the discoveries that have been made–the difference between the continent’s east and west sides, magma movement beneath the ice, icequakes, and more.
