Town Hall Seattle says
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Hiltzik (The New Deal) offers a “fascinating biography” of Ernest Lawrence, the 1930s physicist who forever changed the face–and funding–of scientific research. In Big Science, Hiltzik chronicles Lawrence’s creation of the first particle collider, his instrumental role in winning WWII through the Manhattan Project, and the far-reaching influences of the scientist’s work. Hiltzik will describe these influences–a shift from small science and educational programs, the government-backed research present in today’s world, how science plays a role in global politics–and offer insight into how (and why) this shift toward “big science” became permanent.
